My new love…

Posted on 06. Aug, 2008 by in The Store

You may have seen Simon’s recent blog about ‘Modern Retro’ cars that he loves (if you haven’t, check it out here) – but since I dont like most of the cars on there, I thought I should let you into a secret – I’m in love!

Having been into Japanese cars for as long as I can remember, I have seen some stunning performance cars over the last decade or so. But after seeing countless 600Bhp Supra’s, thousands of JDM Civics and about a billion drift style S13/S14/S14a’s I have seen the light! The one true way to be individual and still have a fun, build a performance oriented car – but make sure its old school!

Im not talking a MY2000 Honda Civic (like my current car – check it out on our staff rides page) or even an early 90′s Toyota MR2 – I’m thinking more along the lines of a Toyota Corolla AE86, Hakosuka Skylines & Datsun 240Zs etc.

These are the kings of old school cool! But I think its a shame to leave these cars standard, you have to modify them – not in some crappy bodykit but through and through engine/chassis upgrades! To get the most from a car. Choose a purpose and build a car to suit – theres no point restoring an old car and then bashing it up on track!

Check out my pick of some amazing retro rockets!

I found these photos of this awesome Coolrolla and Hakosuka while reading the excellent J-Style blog – a must read for anyone into Japanese tuning! I seriously advise reading this blog on a regular basis… do it here!

Oh, and for the record – Throttle bodies rock my socks!

The thing I love about these cars are that they are all rare jems yet they can provide all the thrills of a more modern car but without the traction control, overly complicated suspension and boring looks.

Take a look at this article on 7tune.com about Ayu’s A60 (1984) Celica – its a true diamond of a drift beast!

I have decided that its about time I got myself something Old School to get my thrills in so if you have any suggestions of any cars that I have missed off, please leave me some comments below.

I seriously recommend subscribing to the blogs I mentioned earlier – they are full of retro cars to drool over!

I admit that golf is pretty cool Duncan, but its just not the same – you see loads of old golfs all the time! You never see old japanese stuff over here because it was never sold here, or if it was – only in tiny numbers!

There was a reason it was never sold here! It’s not called Jap Crap for no reason!

Over the next few years chassis development in the junior formulas will be fascinating. The success of Ligier and Mygale in F3 is forcing the tectonic plates of the single-chassis formula apart, and surely it can only be a matter of time before other marques attempt to enter cars into GP2 or WSR.
