Despite the awful weather and snow we’ve had over the past week or two slowly but surely Spring will be turning its head and the road will be perfect again for riding on. Gearing up for the season to come back round now is the perfect time to wheel the bike out of the garage to service and upgrade ready for the happy days ahead. Recently we have begun to retail EBC Bike parts, ranging from upgraded discs, pads & hoses and can now offer these for nearly all motorcycles on the road.

The EBC Pro-lite X disc is an ultra light floating rotor for sports road bikes and road racers. These are a fantastic upgrade from standard rotors and offer, the floating rotor allows the outer disc friction material to heat up and expand without warping or rivet lock occuring (Rivet lock is the term used when rotors heat up under heavy braking and the rotor blade contacts the (normally circular) rivets that separate the inner rotor hub and the outer rotor blade.) This completely eliminates this problem which effects nearly 100% of cases where the rotor has warped/distorted causing braking vibration which means the rotors life is extended as well as providing a much more efficient and consistent way of braking.

The XC series discs are identical to the X Pro-Lite however these have a contoured outer rotor disc. These are the strongest and lightest road sports disc available today. Below are the reasons for why these discs are so special for fast road and sports bikes:

1. Contoured outer rotor reduces weight by 7.5%.
2. New German mill rolled heat treated stainless steel rotor blade.
3. Vertical scraper slot system removes dirt, dust and debris efficiently away from the braking area.
4. Unique fully overlapping vent hole pattern reduces weight, cleans disc blade and helps deglaze pads which prevents fade and ensures a long life of brakes.
5. New Patented Stainless Steel SD (square drive) button drive system. This eliminates brake rotor distortion and vibration (enhancing braking efficiency and life).
6. Ultra lightweight ductile alloy centre hub.
7. Use of SD system allows less drive buttons, with EBC there are 6 to each rotor.
8. Full stainless components, no rusty parts.

Choose Your Bike Brakes.

Since 1986 Venair Silicone Hoses have been developing and manufacturing performance silicone hose kits for aftermarket automotive uses. Venair hoses have quickly become Europe’s most popular silicone hose manufacturer and is used by Seat Motorsport and Renault Sport Touring Cars. The silicone hose kits are a great way to aesthetically improve your engine bay as well as add performance to your vehicle. This is done, say with boost piping etc by the silicone not expanding under increased air pressure where a rubber counterpart would do so. Doing this will improve the airflow by smoothing out any turbulence meaning a high mass of air can pass more quickly. The same goes for coolant fluids too where the hose will not expand or compress under load. Take a look below at the annotated picture for further explanations.

1. All Venair hose kits are available in many different colours. The usual stock held colours available are red, blue, yellow and black. Other colours are available on request and special order and in most cases will arrive to your door within 4 weeks of order.

2. Unlike cheaper kits on the market, when required a Venair hose will actually have an internal metal coil moulded into the silicone for extra rigidity. This is especially apparent on boost piping etc where a large pressure on boost can inflate a rubber pipe reducing power and consistency. All Venair kits are reinforced with fabric which means all hoses will not flex under pressure.

3. Motorsport quality silicone hoses. Venair is a leading brand in silicone hose technology and are used by many professional level motorsport teams such as Renault Sport and Seat Motorsport. Inferior brand silicone hoses will not be able to withstand the harsh conditions of race use without failing.

4. Unlike inferior hose kits, Venair do not pad out their silicone hoses for strength with fillers. This can be very damaging when kits break under stress. Venair only use the finest automotive silicone which gives suitable strength for all road conditions and motorsport use.

5. All Venair hoses are designed to directly replace their OEM counterparts and include any inserts required for use. Breathers, positioning for dump valves etc (on turbo applications) are all pre moulded as one unit on a Venair silicone hose. Many cheaper kits will not have these available which will render the part useless.

One of the biggest difficulties when choosing your new intake kit is finding out which companies are really worth spending that hard earned money on. I for one have spent many hours in front of the laptop screen staring at a mass of images, prices and specs of intakes which let’s face it ends up moulding into one mess in the head with no option chosen. We at POTN have done all of the mind boggling research for you and are extremely excited to offer the new (to us but tried and tested aces of intake technology) AEM Air Intakes. This blog will be focusing on the first level of intake tuning which you can go for, the Short Ram Intake System.

Why An AEM Short Ram?

The AEM Short Ram Intake is fantastic for first time modifying enthusiasts, these kits allow you to benefit from the gains of fitting a high flowing aluminium tubing kit without having to remove the front bumper and arch lining as you would need to with a full cold air intake kit. If you have had experience with this in the past, I’m sure you know how frustrating it can be taking apart half of the car with rusty bolts snapping left right & centre. With the air filter being situated in the coldest part of the engine bay and many of the kits being dyno tested during the development stage all kits will improve the power & torque of the car it is fitted to. When coupled up with a free flowing exhaust system you will have a fantastic setup for road use.

How Would An AEM Short Ram Improve My Car?

An AEM Short Ram intake maximizes the air flow to the inlet by using a single diameter mandrel bent aluminium intake tube. This creates a smoother airflow over using multi diameter tubing allowing more air (and most importantly oxygen) to enter the engine creating more power. All AEM air filters are Dry Flow units which do not require oil, this has two benefits. One, the lack of oil means the life of the air sensor is maintained and cannot be damaged when other filters are over oiled during service intervals. Two, you will never have to purchase oil for the air filter, a simple wash down will suffice. Extensive temperature testing takes place during the development of all AEM Short Ram kits which ensures that only cold air is being drawn into the intake. The colder the air, the more oxgen, the more power the engine produces. Simple!

We at POTN have been getting really excited over launching this (though new to us) absolute market leader in performance intake tuning technology. Founded in 1987 AEM Filters sole mission has been to provide easy installation intake kits which seriously increase a vehicles power / torque output whilst giving amazing aesthetics and incredible engine growl. Their first intake kit was designed all the way back in 1994 for a Honda CRX meaning that they’re extremely knowledgeable and know what they’re doing when it comes to intake performance tuning!

Why An AEM Cold Air Intake Kit?

Renowned for their expertise in developing and manufacturing high performance intake systems and having close links to Honda USA, TRD (Toyota Racing Developments) and with years of tuning knowledge AEM are pioneers in the world of air filters being the first company to do many things such as producing the first out of the box induction kit, develop a multi diameter intake tube to smooth out airflow inside the intake tube and create intake systems which adjust the MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor to read the true air intake rather than it being judged by the ECU assuming the intake pipe diameter and vehicle revs.

How Would An AEM Intake Improve Your Car?

AEM rigorously test their kits on dynos to ensure a power or torque increase is made with each and every one of their products. Engine intake temperatures are closely monitored as the cooler the air being taken in, the more oxygen particles in the air and the stronger the combustion explosion is giving increased power across the band. All full length cold air intakes place the filter away from the engine compartment away from the heat and usually down by the front bumper where the air is at its coolest. All AEM filters use Dryflow technology which ensures that no air filter is impregnated with oil which can damage a very sensitive (and costly!) MAF sensor, you can fit an AEM kit with peace of mind.

This can be caused by purchasing the wrong aftermarket intake system which is saturated in oil and “clogging” up the sensor, which after spending money on a nice new car part and then breaking it is less than a good time.

Why a Pipercross?

How would fitting Pipercross improve your VW?

Unlike many of Pipercross’ competitors, much of the research and development has been specifically spent on the tuning of Volkswagens. Rather than using an oil impregnated air filter, which can unrepairably damage your air sensor a special oil free or “dry” multi-layer foam air filter has been produced. This guarantee’s a high airflow rate improving the vehicles power without the risk of damaging your intake system and offering the highest of engine protection against dust and dirt.

New Audi & Volkswagen replacement Pipercross air filter

How quickly can you get one and how much?

After reading this, you will probably think that these replacement air filters cost the earth. This is far from wrong and nearly all replacement air filters retail at £34.99 inc VAT, shipped and induction kits at £94.99 inc VAT, shipped. Compared to having to replace an air sensor if the wrong air filter is fitted, or buying a restrictive paper filter over and over again, these are a hugely cost effective way of improving the performance and economy of your VAG car.
